چکیده

Real-time control applications involve the interaction of multiple components. As systems become more complex their reliability tends to decrease, hence, fault tolerance must be incorporated to keep reliability within specified levels. A reconfiguration mechanism for processor arrays inspired by mechanisms that take place during the embryonic development of living beings is proposed in this paper. It is illustrated using an example that the rapid fault-recovery characteristic of the embryonic system makes it a promising approach for real-time control applications. Copyright © 1998 IFAC

Biologically Inspired Four Elements Compact Antenna Arrays With Enhanced Sensitivity for Direction of Arrival Estimation

A new four elements compact antenna array is presented and discussed to achieve enhanced phase resolution without sacrificing the array output power. This structure inspired by the Ormia Ochracea’s coupled ears. The analogy between this insect acute directional hearing capabilities and the electrically compact antenna array is used to enhance the array sensitivity to direction of arrival estima...

SABRE: a bio-inspired fault-tolerant electronic architecture.

As electronic devices become increasingly complex, ensuring their reliable, fault-free operation is becoming correspondingly more challenging. It can be observed that, in spite of their complexity, biological systems are highly reliable and fault tolerant. Hence, we are motivated to take inspiration for biological systems in the design of electronic ones. In SABRE (self-healing cellular archite...

Optimal Reconfiguration Algorithms for Real-Time Fault-Tolerant Processor Arrays

-In this paper we consider the problem of reconfiguring processor arrays subject to computational loads that alternate between two modes. A strict mode is characterized by a heavy computational load and severe constraints on response time while a relaxed mode is characterized by a relatively light computational load and relaxed constraints on response time. In the strict mode, reconfiguration i...

In situ self-reconiguration of hexapod robot OSCAR using biologically inspired approaches

A highly desirable feature for next generation robots operating on terrestrial or extraterrestrial environment (Chien et al., 2006) is that they possess the property of sustainable autonomic systems enveloping the self-management and self-x characteristics such: self-reconfiguration, self-optimization, and self-healing. Responses taken automatically by a system without real-time human intervent...

Integrated Diagnosis and Reconfiguration Process for Defect Tolerant WSI Processor Arrays

This paper presents a new technique for construchg a fault-free subarray from a defective WSI (wafer scale integration) processor array based on an integrated diagnosis and reconfiguration (IDAR) method. In a traditional yield enhancement approach, it diagnoses all units first and then the status (faulty or fault-free) of all units are passed to the reconfiguration algorithm for a possible reco...
